The Times. Nie dajmy szkalować Polski i Polaków!
Mr. James Harding, Editor-in-Chief "The Times"
Dear Sir,
On 26 July 2008, your newspaper published a column by Giles Coren under the title "Two waves of immigrations, Poles apart". The author of that malicious article presents slanderous theses regarding the attitude of Poles towards Jews. He uses low tricks to vilify the entire Polish nation. He accuses Poles not only of anti-Semitism but also of crimes against the Jewish nationÉ "Poles used to amuse themselves at Easter by locking Jews in the synagogue and setting fire to it", Mr. Coren writes. The columnist also uses the word "Polack" in the text, which has a clearly pejorative meaning in your country. Even when he writes about the detention of the war criminal Radovan Karadzic, he notes with venomous satisfaction that Serbia is so near to Poland. The suggestion carried by those words is nothing but slander. The freedom of speech is not an absolute value. It cannot relieve the journalist from the duty to present facts in a reliable way, which is the most important rule in our profession. The freedom of speech may not relieve anyone from thinking!
The Times is perceived as an opinion-forming paper. Your newspaper has always taken care to avoid using the term "Polish concentration camps", which is injurious to Poles and at the same time untrue, in your publications. Therefore, keeping that in mind, we insist on your firm reaction to those false insinuations about Poles and Poland.
Yours Sincerely
